The Tolbooth and Mercat Cross
The Tolbooth, the administrative heart of the old town, was built in 1703-05 by Sir William Bruce. Its tower has a rare surviving example of a Dutch pavilion roof. A courthouse and jail were added in 1809. Today, it is a popular music, art and conference venue with a regular year round arts programme. outside in Broad Street stands the Mercat Cross, once the focus of the town's trading activity. The unicorn figure on top is known locally as 'the puggy'.
